My Spooky October TBR

October 1, 2020

 It is officially spooky season!!!

Fall is the best season. No question. Do not fight me on this. And October is the quintessential fall month.

It is the season of curling up with a cozy blanket, some soup, or your favorite hot drink, and a great book.

While I read thrillers literally all year round, (it is my favorite genre if you haven't noticed) in the fall I like to dive into some really dark thrillers and throw in some spooky ghost stories too!

Below I am giving you six books that I am so excited to read this month! I have never read any of these books, I choose them based on their descriptions and recommendations that I trust.

*the following descriptions are not my own as I have not read these books yet*

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. Beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers, and half of a teenaged golden couple. Ellie was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter, Gertie. Now, in present-day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister, Fawn. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that suddenly proves perilous when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished without a trace. Searching for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked deeper into the mystery of Sara's fate, she discovers that she's not the only person who's desperately looking for someone that they've lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.

Baby Doll by Hollie Overton

You've been held captive in one room.

You've been mentally and physically abused every day since you were sixteen years old.

Then one night you realize your captor has left the door to your cell unlocked.

For the first time in eight years, you're free. This is what happens next. . .

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the home’s cameras, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman.

It was everything.

She knows she’s made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post and that her behavior toward the children wasn’t always ideal. She’s not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she’s not guilty—at least not of murder—but somebody is

The Stranger in Our Home by Sophie Draper

When her stepmother dies unexpectedly, Caro returns to her childhood home in the rural English countryside. She hadn’t seen Elizabeth in years, but the remote farmhouse offers refuge from a bad relationship, and a chance to start again.

But going through Elizabeth’s belongings unearths memories Caro would rather stay buried. In particular, the story her stepmother would tell her, about two little girls and the terrible thing they do.

As heavy snow traps Caro in the village, where her neighbors stare and whisper, Caro is forced to question why Elizabeth hated her so much, and what she was hiding. But does she really want to uncover the truth?

The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James

Sarah Piper's lonely, threadbare existence changes when her temporary agency sends her to assist a ghost hunter. Alistair Gellis-rich, handsome, scarred by World War I, and obsessed with ghosts- has been summoned to investigate the spirit of nineteen-year-old maid Maddy Clare, who is haunting the barn where she committed suicide. Since Maddy hated men in life, it is Sarah's task to confront her in death. Soon Sarah is caught up in a desperate struggle. For Maddy's ghost is real, she's angry, and she has powers that defy all reason. Can Sarah and Alistair's assistant, the rough, unsettling Matthew Ryder, discover who Maddy was, where she came from, and what is driving her desire for vengeance-before she destroys them all?

Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty: a day by day shopping guide

September 3, 2020

The 21 Days of Beauty sale is one of my favorite sales of the year! Usually taking place twice a year, this sale features amazing brands and products at 50% off. Each day the products are different and you have only 24 hours to snatch each product at an amazing price. I like to use this sale to stock up on some of my holy grail products like Tarte Shape Tape and my favorite Tarte mascara. It would also be the perfect time to purchase any products that you've been wanting to try out.

In this post, I am only going to be featuring products that I have tried and love, or will be trying! I will admit this 21 Days isn't as full of my favorite products as it has been in the past, but none the less there are still some great picks included!

Thursday, September 3

Being as pale as I am, choosing the right bronzer can be tricky. This is one of the only two bronzers I can use that can look natural on my fair skin or be built up when I have self-tanner on. The formula is *chefs kiss* and it will last you forever!

Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer | Sun Bunny Natural Bronzer | Chocolate Gold Soleil Bronzer | Sweetheart Luminous Glow Bronzer

Friday, September 4

This is a product that I have not tried myself. But I have seen many people rave about it so I am going to purchase one for this sale. I like that it is reusable, so it saves money and reduces waste!

Original Pink Makeup Eraser | Chic Black Makeup Eraser

Saturday, September 5

If you only shop one day, SHOP THIS DAY! I will be buying each of these products. Of course, shape tape is my go-to concealer, nothing beats it and I will fight you on that. I am also purchasing the other two products for the first time to try! I am super excited about the glow wand since many people seem to be loving it and I love any product that can give me some non-greasy glow. The Tula Primer is a newer product, I love their original primer so I want to give this one a try too!

Tarte Shape Tape | Shape Tape Glow Wand | Tula Smoothing Primer Gel

Wednesday, September 9

I have no idea why it took me so long to incorporate a primer into my everyday makeup routine, but the first ones I ever tried a few years ago were Becca. Each of these primers is wonderful. I would look at each one and decide which one you need as each is good for different things. My personal favorite is the Ever-matte poreless priming perfector because nine times out of ten I opt for a matte look.

Ever-matte poreless priming perfector | First Light Priming Filter | Backlight Priming Filter | Skin Love Brighten & Blur Primer

Monday, September 14

This is a product that I have just discovered in the last few months and have fallen in love with! I have always been afraid of liquid eyeliner, but I hate pencil liner. This liner is so easy to work with and even though it is "stay all day" it comes off without vigours scrubbing on your eyes. I use the brown for every day and the black for a more dolled-up look.

Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner Black | Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner Brown

Thursday, September 17

And the final products I will be purchasing are the ones on sale on MY BIRTHDAY! These products are two tried and true faves of mine. The FAB cleanser is a great pre-cleanse, makeup remover. And finally, this Tarte Mascara is my all-time favorite mascara. Other than the tube being simply beautiful, this mascara creates long, voluminous lashes with no clumpiness and it does not flake off!

Book Review: His & Hers by Alice Feeney

August 25, 2020

His & Hers by Alice Feeney

My Rating: 9/10

Alice Feeney's latest novel has been a hot topic in the world of Mystery & Thriller recently, and although I had never read any of her books before, this one caught my eye. Needless to say, I am beyond glad I picked up this book because once I did, I could not put it down. I loved it so much that I immediately went back and read her other novels as well and I was not disappointed. Alice Feeney, you have yourself another devoted fan.

"There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. Which means someone is always lying."

When news reporter Anna Andrews is sent back to her small hometown to cover a murder, she is less than thrilled. She has had some of the worst news come down on her at her job, it has been ages since she visited Blackdown, and to top it all off, when she gets to the location of the murder, the lead detective is none other than her ex-husband. Could this get any worse for Anna? The answer is yes.

Lead Detective Jack is not particularly happy with this situation either. The murder victim isn't exactly a stranger, and the last thing he needed was his ex-wife covering the story. Because she might not know it yet, but Anna knows the victim too. As if Jack didn't already have enough emotional baggage to carry, his whole world is about to be turned upside down.

This case is shaking everything up in tiny Blackdown and as it gets increasingly worse, it threatens to ruin the lives of these two characters. Because everyone is keeping secrets, and the only way to keep them a secret, is to kill.

Narrated both from Jack and Anna's persepctives, this twisty suspense is a great summer read. His & Hers had one of the most surprising and clever endings of any book I have read. It left me shocked, yet I was physically laughing at just how much I had been fooled. The finale was so satisfying and mind-boggling that I had to re-read it! You do not want to wait to read this book!

Have you read any of Alice Feeney's incredible novels?

Book Review: The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

August 8, 2020

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

My Rating: 8/10

I finally got around to reading one of 2019’s top thriller books. Shamefully, I must admit that when this book was first published I judged it by its cover and it was not something that caught my eye. Finally, last week when hunting for a new read, I came across this The Silent Patient again and decided to give it a try, and I am so glad I did. I can see now why it was, and still is, such a popular read. It is one of those reads that keeps you guessing and questioning every character, but I bet you won’t guess how it ends.

Alicia Berenson is a renowned painter, her husband a distinguished fashion photographer. Together they live in a magnificent home overlooking one of the most beautiful areas in London. One evening Alicia’s husband, Gabriel, gets home from work very late. He walks into his home only to be shot five times by none other than Alicia herself. Or was it? No one has any answers because Alicia has not spoken a single word since. She is completely silent. Many have tried to get her to speak, but criminal psychotherapist Theo Faber believes he can be the one to crack Alicia’s mind wide open. His dedication is borderline obsessive, making you wonder...why does he want Alicia to talk so badly, after all these years?

This book carries on as if the two protagonists' lives are parallel, when in fact they are entwined in a crazy twist that you won’t discover until the very end, and it will leave you with your jaw dropped. Alex Michaelides did a phenomenal job on his debut novel, creating a fan base that already wants more books just like The Silent Patient.

Book Review: The Safe Place by Anna Downes

July 7, 2020

The Safe Place by Anna Downes

Release Date: July 14, 2020

My Rating: 7/10

For Anna Downes' debut novel, she graced the Mystery & Thriller genre with The Safe Place, and it is the perfect summer read. This book draws you in with its curious characters and compelling plot. As you get past the initial start of the book, you almost forget you are reading a mystery. Downes paints such a vivid picture of the settings, you feel as if you have traveled there yourself. You begin to fall in love with the characters and the relationships that form between them. Then little occurrences remind you exactly what kind of book you are reading, keeping you flipping page after page until the suspense is broken and you find out just how dark this plot is.

June 2, 2020

I didn't know how to address everything happening, but I knew I did not want to stay silent. So first I prayed. Hard. And I read my Bible. And then I realized, I needed to write. It is what I love. It is how I best express myself.

While I am an "American" I feel almost like an outsider as I am watching this all unfold. Living in Germany I tend to feel like I live in a bubble. Needless to say, my bubble has been abruptly popped.

I first want to say I am saddened, confused, and appaled by the unjust, brutal murder of the innocent George Floyd. And that is an understatement. This is not only about racism, but also about a truly innocent man who was murdered by an evil, corrupt man. I understand that I, as a white woman, will never understand. But I am not ignorant, I know that these injustices are very prevalent in our black community, but I am nonetheless shocked. It hurts me to know that any human has to endure such discrimination, but especially in America where every citizen is supposed to be FREE. It is the whole reason I live in another country, because my husband is serving, fighting for the freedom of EVERY American Citizen. I keep thinking, this must be such painful deja vu for anyone who was alive for the Civil Rights movement in the sixties. This issue was supposed to be resolved and banished from our country!!

And my heart only breaks further seeing the riots. Seeing these fires, ruined buildings, more people being hurt and killed. The destruction of people's livelihood. The HATE being spread by so many. Now do not misunderstand, I know this is all an act of rage. Very justified rage. I see the meaning and intent behind it. But we are quite literally fighting fire with fire and it is only creating more fire! I pray so hard for a solution that does not involve the violence that first ignited this rage. It has been done before!

Ephisians 4:26 says, "Be angry, and yet do not sin.."

As a christian woman especially, it just does not make sense to me how so much hate can be spread over the color of someone's skin. The first thing I think of is the song I sang so often in VBS as a child that says, "red and yellow, black and white. they are precious in HIS sight". Our mighty God created us all in his loving image. Why is the superiority of one person, or group of people, because of their skin color even a thing!?

1 Samuel 16:7 says, "...for the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart."

Romans 14:13 says, "Therefore let us not pass judgement on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hinderance in the way of a brother"

Something I have noticed that is really bothering me is the hate being spread on social media. I have not experienced this, but I have seen so much of this happening to those that I follow. I personally love being a part of this social media age. For me, it is such a fun, positive space. Now I know social media is a strong tool, in fact, it is the most relevant tool in our world today. But just because some people are not posting about it, does not mean they are complacent. EVERYONE GRIEVES DIFFERENTLY. You do not know what else these people could be doing to address the situation in their own ways. They could be donating, volunteering, teaching, learning, PRAYING.

Matthew 6: 5-6 says, "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corner, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you"

This is a time that will no doubt be marked in history. Generations after us will learn about everything happening at this very moment. This is an opportunity for positive change. Do it right. Do it respectfully. Set an example.

I will end with a passage I have read several times in the last five days...

"Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or riviling for riviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For 'Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.' Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil" - 1 Peter 3: 8-17

I welcome open, kind conversation about any of these topics
